Dubai part 4

  1. I remember first hearing about Dubai back when this program was first aired. I thought it was amazing that they were able to build the Palm Island and that they were building a tower that was over a mile in height! I watched the Dubai World Cup Horse Race one year and have thought it would be a wonderful place to go.

  2. Sheikh Muhammed is such an inventive man. Not only does he strive to become the best and biggest in everything, but the speed in which he expects to recieve those desires is phenominal. His pace is remarkably fast and pressuring because he wants his people to experience it now and not 20 years from now. The Sheikh wants to have the top of line healthcare, housing, and higher education for his people. He seems like a good leader because he is looking out for his people and transforming his nation into such a luxurious place. Due to the Sheikh's efforts, Dubai is now known for the world's tallest building, the most expensive purse, the most expensive hotel, and Palm Island. Economists predict that Dubai will soon be declared the perfect business location for global trade and international affairs due to its medial location and easy access. One thing that surprises me, due to this rapid economic and industrial boost, foreigners now outweigh the locals nine to one.

  4. Although I was impressed with the fact that healthcare, education (including college), water and electricity are all provided for by the government, I am not impressed with the Sheik. His only concerns seem to be profit and ego. He doesn't seem to care about regulations of any kind (trade, governmental, environmental). He also seems to have no concerns about preserving culture in an area so rich with culture. I don't think the new version of camel races can be considered a way of preserving culture. It will be interesting to see in the coming years and decades what kind of real effect this will have on his country. I also don't trust him when he says he loves america and the american people. I think his relationship with Iran is disconcerting as well. Again, it will be interesting to see in the coming years what his real motives are and if he really is to be trusted.

  5. I found the videos about Dubai super interesting. I had no idea that it blew up in such little time. It seems like a very expensive place to live. My father has been there and he said it is extremely hot. I like the king a lot he is a very interesting person and would watch more videos about him. I think it a very interesting place and would love to go visit.

  6. I think it is interesting to see how history repeats itself, in regards to exploitation of ethnic groups. I wish the people of the world would finally learn the very evident lesson that people are more important than profit. As a Geography major, I find Dubai extremely impressive, especially in terms of urban planning. The sheer power of their vision, and creation thereafter, is not a common reality. The Sheikh's opinions on the Iraq War were not surprising. However, it is very saddening to be reminded that the majority of the worlds nations did not agree with former President Bush's decision, and yet we proceeded without thought. It is then no surprise that our foreign policy is often ridiculed. Jayne McGaughey Arabic 1001

  7. I already knew about Dubai being that my mother lived there for a few months a couple years ago. I found the videos to be informative though and show a different side of Dubai i wasn't aware of before. I have always found there policies to be questionable but Dubai is beautiful none the less. I think as Dubai continues to grow so will my knowledge of it.

  8. This video was pretty good. I definitely wouldn't mind having a place in Dubai, especially on the palm island. It is so hard to believe a place that is that small has all the buildings and businesses that it has. The only real negative thing that i gathered from the video was the labor force thing . The people working there should live in better conditions but other than that it looked like a very cool place to go.

  9. Dubai is pretty awsome. Like they said, this city kinda sprang up from nowhere. I've heard of Dubai once or twice but never knew the signifacance of it. A new tallest building in the world, a chain of islands called "The World," and the largest shopping center in the world is alot to have in one area. And there are only rich people buying those island homes on the Palm Tree shaped, man-made beaches. I really like the free health care and college tuition.

  10. I do not know a lot about economics, but by the video it seems that the growth of Dubai is definitely positive. I mean if they can build a chain of islands with million dollars home on them than that’s really interesting. It is really great to see that the woman of Dubai are experiencing high levels of gender equality. The camel racing look very fun!

  11. Dubai is a very interesting city and I would love to visit all of the beautiful places it has to offer. It was cool to learn about the origins and how progressive it was. It seems to care about it's people a lot, but the ideas of the leaders are not as good. Although Sheikh Muhammed wants things to be better for his people I don't think it's in his best interest. I also enjoyed the camel races.

  12. After viewing the cilps on Dubai, I am definitely going to attempt to visit. Although, I may not be able to afford a trip there now, I hope to one day venture to the place that seems as if it is another world. Enormous sky-scrapers, indoor ski resorts, extravagant malls and hotels, Dubai has all one could wish for. The islands that were constructed at the orders of Sheikh Muhammed are truly amazing. Sheikh Muhammed is an extremely ambitious and disciplined man who makes up his mind to do something and accomplishes it. I also believe the free health care and tax plicies are extremely appealing. Dubai has to be considered one of the world's greatest places.

  13. It was a beautiful city, but I think the worst part were the living conditions for the South Asian workers. They live in shady little compounds out of the way in abject poverty. I mean, it seems sort of silly for them to take those men out of the city and into a more rural type of area when I'm sure there's plenty of space in the city for them to live closer to where they work, and maybe get a better job or save for a better house. I do think that the city is beautiful, but all of that modernism comes at a price (and it did for America , too), and it just so happens that the price is the people that built it and physically made it what it is.

  14. Before seeing these videos I hardly knew anything about Dubai. It's a gorgeous, huge, and fast growing city. It's inspiring how much the Sheikh has done for Dubai. I'd love to visit it one day if I could ever afford it ha. I have a friend who visited Dubai and the world tallest building and he said it was absolutely amazing, and scary!

  15. Before watching these videos about Dubai, it was already my number one vacation destination. I plan on visiting soon after I graduate college. This place sounds like the new land of opportunity. They have free college tuition and free healthcare and no taxes on businesses. Dubai sounds like the place to be and I will be moving there if I ever get enough money.
