  1. “Captain Abu Raed” is a very upsetting movie. The thematic elements it portrayed on screen, such as familial abuse, delayed or forgotten education, murder, female oppression, etcetera, are rarely things one comes face to face with in our society. They are societal realities that are held under wraps for many or are simply ignored—things that come to “light” in the dark, ironically enough. I think the most powerful parts of the movie were the small things, like when Tareq says no to his father, which is the first time he fights against the abuse. I think the movie was very good at revealing the cycle of the lower class versus the upper class. This cyclical process can be seen all over the world, in millions of different families, where the rich are getting richer and the poor getting poorer. It is a process that is only reinforced by the perpetuated idea of many that everyone has their “place,” and must stay there.

  2. I found this movie to be very depressing throughout most of it. Seeing that the main story takes place in a poor neighborhood sets the scene for an upsetting film. I thought that it was a very interesting film at the same time. It had a message in it that I could see depicted in some American movies; that of the main character trying to make a difference in others lives. Seeing the parts such as abuse were very powerful scenes and help enhance the seriousness of the film. All in all i thought that the movie was done very well and I seeing how many awards it has won is very impressive.

  3. I must say that I was particularly impressed by Abu Raed. I find it as a movie of extremes. At some points it could be depressing and at other points it can be uplifting. In any case it was a refreshing break from the monotony of American Cinema. The movie also gives the audience insight into Arabic culture that most of use haven't seen before; for example the importance of marriage in the Arabic culture. But the true message was of hope and self sacrifice. The idea that a man was willing to lay down his life out of love and the hope that his sacrifice will better somebody else's future was powerful and left me uplifted as i walked out.

  4. Captain Abu Raed is a powerful movie about a man who is concerned with the welfare of a few boys in his neighborhood. He is an example of how it takes a community to raise a child. At the end he knew what he would face when he confronted the abusive husband and father. I believe the loss of his child followed by the death of his wife prepared him mentally for the confrontation. Abu Raed was not afraid to die to help the mother and her two boys. He even attempted to help the father but some people cannot be changed in their ways. I feel these situations are prevalent in the United States and all over the world but there is no Captain Abu Raed for them.

  5. What a gem of a film for Jordan! I really enjoyed watching Captain Abu Raed. To me, the movie was about what it means to be generous. Abu Raed exemplifies what it means to give—he gave his money to Tareq so that he could go to school, he gave his time to the children to give them hope with his stories, and, for Murad, he gave his life. Because of Abu Raed’s sacrifice, Murad was able to become a captain at the airport. The film is about the affects of violence in the home; Abu Raed is a nonviolent force that gives his life to stop the violence in Murad’s home.

  6. Captain Abu Raed was a great movie! I love how Abu Raed was trying to help the children all throughout the movie. He would tell the kids stories to encourage them, buy one of the boys candy that he was selling so he could go to school, and even saved a boy and his family from his abusive father. It really showed how people should be:encouraging, brave, generous, and kind. Abu Raed was also the reason Tareq was able to become a pilot, even though as a boy Tareq didn't think it was possible and even said "people like us don't become pilots." This really shows how people, with some inspiration and encouragement, can do anything they put their mind to.

  7. The movie "Captain Abu Raed" was a very capturing movie. I enjoyed the movie greatly. Although I could not understand most of what they were saying, the subtitles, plus the acting, allowed it to transend the language boundary. We all could of had emotions that were portrayed in the film. It was easy to relate to all of the characters. Their lives had many similarities with the lives of people here in the United States. Many people feel they have lost everything, or have parents who are controlling or pushy. The more serious issues may not affect everyone, but they are present in every society. This inspired connections between me and the rest of the audience and the people on screen, which is what movie producers are trying to do. So overall I really enjoyed the movie, and seeing the subtitles helped; I'll probably watch it again to try to get some of the stuff they were saying!

  8. “Captain Abu Raed” was a beautiful movie. It was great to see a man help children in his neighborhood become better people. Abu Raed went above and beyond to help people achieve their dreams. I cried during the second half of the movie, but it had an inspirational ending. Abu Raed sacrificed his life and safety to help Murad and his family. Not many people would risk life and limb like he did for that family. This movie shows an example of what happens when people are helped and are given access to different life opportunities. In other words, a little inspiration can go a long way.

  9. Captain Abu Raed was a very entertaining movie and evoked many emotions in me throughout the film. I think whenever you can give children hope who may not be in the best situations that they can be whatever they want to be, then you are truly impacting their lives in the long run in a positive way. Many people throughout the world go through the same type of struggles as those in the film did and the kindness Abu Raed displayed helped them. As in the movie, being kind to people and having courage to do what is right can go a long way in improving that person's life. This film was very inspiring and a good choice.

  10. Captain Abu Raed is now one of my favorite movies of all time. What it lacks in grandeur you might see in a modern action or Sci-fi movie, it more than makes up for in a compelling story driven by men and women, and even children. Captain Abu Raed is a character that any audience would feel immediately sympatric to, and easily feel saddened by his loss. He not only bettered the lives of the children in the movie, but with everyone he came into contact with. Captain Abu Raed strikes at the very heat of problems faced by people all around the world, concerning poverty, the importance of education in bettering the way of life for any one.

  11. I am not a big fan of somber movies but Captain Abu Raed is definitely a good movie. I find it inspiring how he tried so hard to inspire his weary community. He told the neighborhood kids stories about his fictional travels to invoke hope in the children of his neighborhood who knew too much about hard times. His dealings with Tareq was especially inspiring because he bought Tareq's candy every day to make sure he continued to go to school. But Abu's greatest show of compassion of course comes at the end of the movie when he helps Murad and his family escape abuse, and one can conclude it cost him his life to protect Murad and his family. In all, this was a great movie with a great message. Unlike many movies today, it has a true message and sparks a feeling of compassion inside all of its viewers.
