  1. Unfortunately I never had the pleasure of going to Qatar while I lived in UAE. But the city looks a lot like Abu Dhabi and Dubai. I did travel with Qatar Airways airline and their services are just as luxurious as their city. I had no ide that education and electricity are free there. That's just icing on the cake and I am surprised that there are not more wealthy middle eastern countries doing the same thing. I would love to finally travel to Qatar just to see the difference between cultures of different middle eastern countries. These were great videos. Austin Lowe, ARAB 1001

  2. Qatar is a seemingly wonderful place. They have free health care and education. Those are just a few things that I wish was free in America. Before watching the videos, I was unaware of life in Qatar. I thought Qatar was a poor country, but the video revealed that the citizens in Qatar are one of the richest people and they don’t have to pay taxes. The videos were very insightful and I like the fact that the country is taking the initiative to improve their lives.

  3. Qatar seems like a great place to visit. The skyscrapers in these videos remind me of the skyscrapers of Dubai. I was really impressed by how the Qataris built so many different types of communities and even cities within the country that resemble other parts of the world. One can go from a cutting edge mall filled with all kinds of new gadgets to a traditional ancient looking city market that was actually constructed just five years ago. The fact that so many privileges are free to the Qatari citizens is mind boggling. I would hate to see what would happen to Qatar if they ran out of natural gas though. All in all, Qatar would be a great place to visit and experience.

  4. Qatar seems like an amazing place to visit. It was really interesting to how the country is made up of people from so many different places. It was cool to hear people explain what it was like for them and their families to move to Qatar. My favorite part of watching these videos of different countries is seeing all the different sports and activities they have. Overall I think Qatar would be a very cool place to see.

  5. The education and medical segments really stood out to me. I think it's a very smart idea to make two of the most essential and important things that you have to do in life for free. I think there would be a lot of success if people were given there education and medical needs. Also more people would have the opportunity to get an education which would produce more workers.

  6. Qatar seems like a great place to not only visit, but live as well. The country is beautiful, there are many places to shop and relax, and Qatar also seems to have the feel of the traditional middle eastern country mixed with some ideals of the 21st century, which makes it unique and desirable to visit. It is also evident that Qatar cares for her people by providing free healthcare and free education- two necessities for a strong and prosperous society. The United States needs to take some notes from Qatar because they seems to have it figured out for the most part.

  7. My Dad has traveled to Qatar about 5 times now for business and each time he returns he has learned a new word or two and is excited to give us arabic gifts. I remember once he brought back an arabic bronzed tea set with miniature cups, but of course I lost the cups and the bronze plate since I was only five years old. My dad never mentioned the beauty of the city and the intricate details Qatar provides for its people in design and economic benefits. I didn't know they could decorate the country so diversely within a matter of a couple streets, one is traditional and ancient looking and the other modern and high tech. My dad never mentioned the free electricity or education. But that was probably because he wasn't there to see the schools or live in a regular house, instead he stayed in the upscale hotels paid by his company so of course electricity is free in a hotel. Perhaps Obama was studying Qatar when he formulated his concept of free healthcare and equality for all classes.

  8. The Qatar videos were very informative. With very little democracy, Qatar has been ruled by the same ruler for 150 years; however, the country’s 250,000 citizens are the richest in the world and have the luxury of paying no taxes. I find it interesting that Qatar sits on top of the third largest natural gas reserves on the planet. Considering the location, it is surprising that 94% of Qatar’s labor force is foreign. Qatar is powerful and influential due to its television network, Aljazeera, which covers the news and is on the air 24 hours a day. Qatar seems like a great place to live, especially with all of the benefits of being a citizen.

  9. Qatar seems ridiculously exciting. Simon is right when he mentions that kind of environment would be unfathomable to Americans; a world without taxes, but free public amenities does sound like paradise to me. I find it very surprising that Al-Jazeera is based in Qatar—the country seems to have this overflow of resources, whether physical or not, that are not bound by their small borders. While the present and future of Qatar only seems to be glowing with pride and production, I worry about the migrant workers, and the many cases of abuse that have been found. I found this article and video in my curiosity about their work conditions—it is ironically by Al-Jazeera:

  10. I would love to visit Qatar at some point in time. I found these videos very interesting and informative. I had no idea that Qatar offered free education to its people. It was also interesting to see that it is a traditional style middle eastern culture with modern aspects as well. To see that they have alot of shopping areas and free education as well as medicine was pretty cool to see.

  11. Qatar seems like an amazing place to visit after watching those videos. The standard of living for its citizens beats most places in America by far. I was surprised to find that the electricity and education is free for citizens, and all for citizens who do not have to pay taxes. Qatar is a beautiful place and from everything I’ve seen, a great place to live.

  12. Why do I always get so surprised about these Arab countries' people? I had never known that people of Qatar were actually okay with not having a democracy, having been ruled for a century and a half by the same family. I think I have been way undereducated about Arab countries, and the middle-east as a whole, because of current war or similar situations. Maybe that's why I was in total disbelief that Qatar residents are some of the richest people in the world. I would very much like to visit Qatar, and hopefully I will one day.

  13. Qatar is a small but influential country due to its oil reserves and the vision of its leader. The country enjoys a standard of living that is almost unheard of anywhere else in the world. However the native population is only 250,000 people and the military might leaves something to be desired. In other words the paradise has glass walls and positive relations with other countries and organizations are the only thing keeping the nation safe. I envy those living in this country but I have serious doubts about its resilience if it was to ever face political or military crisis.

Once again I am in awe of the beauty of this region. I love the fact that education and healthcare are free - something we should strive for in this country. I was surprised to learn that over 90% of the workers are foreign. I also didn't realize that Al Jazeera was based our of Qatar. Their attitude about foreign policy seems a bit too naive. Hard to imagine a country like that just hoping to be friends with everyone. Maybe there's more to it, I don't know. Always fascinating to learn about the countries and people of this region.
