I enjoyed watching this film because I believe it was an accurate portrayal of what many people from the Middle East experienced upon coming to America in the early 2000's. I know that many people then faced prejudice, just because they happened to be from the same part of the world as the terrorists who attacked America. I do wish that the story had gone a little further, but I have noticed that most foreign films seem to end just as they are beginning. I guess I am just used to the way films are made here. I enjoyed listening to the Arabic and trying to pick out various words I knew, though it was nice when they spoke English as well!
I loved the movie so much more than I thought I would! It really gave me a look inside how much the average Arab-American person deals with just being who they are. I really sympathized with Fadi and his mother's struggle - it seems really easy to just give up when you have to deal with stereotyping to that extent everyday. I'm just glad they didn't though! I was able to pick up on a few words, and I even tried to repeat after them to see if I could do it, but overall I'm glad the English subtitles were there!
The film was great because it accurately portrayed the types of situations that immigrants must go through when attempting to settle down in America. In the case of people whom are of arabic descent, their situation is more difficult. As with the known prejudice against "muslims" and in fact all persons looking of native- arabic descent, our country's leniency is still struggling to develop. Fadi and his mother had to continue to accept defeat and discouragement over and over again throughout the movie. I am very glad there was english subtitles, otherwise I wouldn't have been understand anything but a few greeting phrases.Great movie, excellent choice!
I enjoyed this movie a lot. I can't imagine moving to America and be stereotyped as the negative image of a Muslim. It is not fair and it is sad that so many people get treated this way because they do not look / speak / act like everyone else. The story was simple and believable, as close to real life as a movie can get I think. The subtitles helped a lot but I did catch a couple of words and phrases that we have been learning in class.
This film embodies the prejudice that people form the middle east have faced since 911 in America. I believe that this prejudice is what all immigrants must deal with when coming to a new country. It is good that their family stayed together and had each others back in the end. I don't like how we judge people just because they are different, but maybe we can change that behavior eventually. I understood some of the greetings and words said that I learned in class.
I found the film much more interesting and enjoyable than I thought I would. Coming from a small high school in middle Georgia, I had heard a few times that things like this occurred but I had never seen them first hand. I enjoyed seeing how the family stuck together through everything and were always supportive of each other. I have a friend who's family is from Egypt and who moved to my hometown in the eighth grade. As far as I know he never dealt with any form of racism or bullying. It was eye opening to see that kind of stuff actually happens and I learned a lot about the trials of people from that part of the world moving to America.
Definitely a very different point of view. Seeing the completely different changes they experienced from Palestine to America was very eye opening. In the early 2000's, there was so much prejudice and blind hate that sadly, there were probably many Arabic people who experienced troubles like Fadi's, and some who's were worse. This movie was a very good representation of how hard it can be to completely change your life and your culture in a matter of days, something everyone should take into consideration before they try to judge a foreigner. Very eye opening movie, and a very deep meaning.
I like this movie. Its definitely an eye opening experience with the American character who keeps bullying Fadhi. I think it shows how america is so easy to categorize people who are different after tragedies that we have experienced. I also like how the movie shows how important pride and honor is to the Arabic world. Fadhi went to the boys house to seek honor for his mother. Also the glimpses into Arabic culture was great and it makes you see how family gathers around food and music and celebration. It was sad at times with the families adaptation to the US. But overall it was a great movie with just enough politics and comedy.
I actually enjoyed the movie. I was very hesitant about the film because my grandmother makes me watch arabic soap opera and they are one of the worst things i have ever seen. But this movie actually had a plot that Arabic and non Arabic speakers could follow.
I really did enjoy this movie. This movie was very funny at some parts and at other parts it was pretty sad and depressing like in the first part of the movie when they lost all their money at the airport. This movie also did a very good job showing the racism that a lot of Americans had and still have toward people from that region of the world, and how ignorant Americans are when it comes to foreigners. Overall i liked this movie and would definitely recommend it to a friend.
Amreeka is an entertaining movie with some elements of comedy and drama throughout. The film is very eye-opening. It shows what life is like for middle easterners living in America after 9/11. The movie does an excellent job portraying the stereotypes that most Americans have towards "outsiders." This negative stereotype can be a growing concern for many innocent foreigners entering the United States. The movie allows its viewers the opportunity to see the world in a different perspective. I would definitely like to see more movies similar to this.
Amreeka was a way better movie than I had originally anicpated. It was pretty funny and entertaining, and it was also great to be able to hear how different people in the film spoke Arabic to each other. Amreeka provides great insight and evidence of prejudice that exists in America after our terrorist attacks in 2001. That kid that always gave Fadi crap in school ( I'm having trouble rememberinghis name) was actually a great example of how people have recently unfairly treated Muslims in America, based on the actions of extremists. The kid was the true terrorist, or antagonist, in the movie, especially in the scene where he made Fadi's mom fall at the White Castle where she worked. I enjoyed how we got good insight on Arab culture and view of Americans, and a close-up view on really the process of integration and how it's not at all as easy as it seems .
Amreeka was a great movie, although I do wish the ending was different. I wanted to find out if she would get a bank job, or if her son would begin to feel more at home. The movie also delved into the ignorance that ran through the country after the 9/11 attacks and seeing that made me feel rather bitter and upset because the exact things that were being said in the movie are the exact sentiments of some Americans still to this day. The struggle the family faced in the movie wasn't made up, millions of people just like the family in the movie still have to deal with the intolerance of others here due to pure ignorance. Hopefully through education and common sense, we can all one day get along.
