Morocco Summer Abroad 2017: Third Week

14 comments:

  1. Time is moving pretty fast here in Morroco. 3 weeks have already passed, and I have another 3 left here in this beautiful country. This past weekend, we had the chance to visit Volubilis, Meknes, and Fes. Although very hot, I had a great time learning about the extensive history of each city. It was a great opportunity to learn of the hard work and creative minds it takes to create amazing pottery and leather pieces.

Most of our group here is leaving after this week, so I will take advantage of branching out and exploring new things that I have yet to see here. My travels here in Morocco have yet to grow old on me as I look forward to future adventures that I surely have been blessed with.

  2. I can't believe that it's the last week here in Morocco. I have thoroughly enjoyed it. This past weekend we went to Casablanca on Wednesday. We went to Hassan II mosque. The architecture was beautiful. Afterwards, we went to the mall which had a lot of expensive stores. This weekend we went to Fes and Meknes. The weather was really hot, but the trip was still enjoyable. The riads were very beautiful, and the souk was very chaotic. I liked seeing the dying pools at the leather shop. My most favorite part was going to the pottery workshop. It was cool to see the process from beginning to end. Afterwards, I liked going to the store to see all Of the pieces. On my last week here, I will try to enjoy it and get last minute gifts for my family while trying to get ready for this presentation.

  3. This past week has been a lot of fun. I really feel like I am learning in class and I love my teacher she is really entertaining. On Wednesday we went to Casablanca and despite the fact that we never got to meet Youssef's parents I still had a lot of fun. The mosque was beautiful and I loved how it sits right on the water. After we went to the Mosque we had ice-cream next to the ocean. Ice-cream and the ocean are two of my favorite things so I was extremely excited that we go to combine them. After getting ice-cream we went to the mall and I got my makeup done for free by the ladies at the kiosk. The mall was huge and one of the prettiest malls I'v seen.

The rest of the week went by pretty quickly. I enjoyed our excursion to Voloubis, Fez and Meknes. It was over 100 degrees in Fez so everyone was a bit agitated but we all made the best out of the experience. I think my favorite part of the trip was eating a cheeseburger at the restaurant. I hadn't realized how much I missed it until I took the first bite. I also really enjoyed the Riyadh we stayed at and the rooftop dinner we had in Fez.

  4. This entire experience has flown by. We're in our last week here as an entire class and its the saddest thing ever. Fortunately our Arabic has only become better as we approach our final and our projects which happen to be a speech. Our vocabulary has also been greatly extended as we explored the imperial cities of Volubilis, Meknes, and Fez. It was fantastic seeing the different trades in the city of Fez along with the history of the 3 cities. Volubilis was my favorite, but I'm always a sucker for old ruins. I can't wait to see what the rest of the week has in store as we end our time here in Morocco!

  5. With week 3 coming to a close, I am becoming sentimental about my time spent in Morocco. We put in work in class, but have a lot of free time, where we also learn Arabic by talking to the people we interact with on a daily basis. I've had many interesting conversations with random people in the street, pharmacists, taxi drivers, store keepers, and, most notably a 4 hour long conversation with the lady who did my nails the other day. I learn a lot studying in class, but I learn most by talking with people in real-life situations. I love being able to talk with anyone and practice the language. It is an experience you can't get easily in the States.
This week we visited Volubilis, Meknes, and Fes. I love Ancient Roman history, so Volubilis was cool to see again. We visited the old prison and the grainery in Meknes too, something we didn't do when I was in Morocco last. My favorite city this weekend was Fes, where I bought some cool handmade handbags made of camel leather tanned and dyed in the old medina. Knowing the history of Fes makes the tour even more interesting.

  6. It's safe to say we officially received our Moroccan diplomas this week. We gave souk-masters the stink eye to bargain for our treasures, and even entirely shed our American skin in the hmmam. In Fes, Meknes, and Volubilis we explored the never-ending souk, spotted the oldest university in the world Al-Karouine, and visited ancient Roman ruins where we learned exactly what vomitoriums were. It was hot, but it was not as on fire as the history was inspiring. It's safe to say this has been the best week thus far, especially considering we have become more immersed into Moroccan culture, as it is also an understatement to claim that visiting Morocco has been an awe-inspiring and life-changing experience. Never before in my life has it been easier to make friends and practice a foreign language, and never in my life have I ever grown so much in such a short amount of time. I am endlessly thankful to be a part of this journey with my fellow study-abroaders, and I hope I have the opportunity to feel as alive as I do on this trip. Thank you, Morocco.

  7. So the last week of Morocco. I have enjoyed my time here in this country. Starting off this last weekend we traveled to the cities of Meknes, Fes, and the Roman ruins of Volubilis. Volubilis was especially enjoyable for me because I am really interested in history and ruins. The ancient colony was really noteworthy for the amount of architecture still standing and made during its heyday, such as a Triumph Arch. It takes significant notice when it was a minor colony on the edge of the Roman Empire. The next best part of the trip was to the city of Fes. Here we went through the markets and the old tanneries where they make leather items. However the most notable aspect to me was the places we stayed and ate at. On the outside it seemed like your skeptical, labyrinthine alleyways, but on the inside they were highly decorative and welcoming. It was a real and nice surprise.

  8. Our last week of classes and time here in Morocco has begun! It’s sad to think it’s almost time to go home, but I will be glad to be done with homework for at least a couple of weeks. This past weekend was a lot of fun, but the heat definitely matched the good times. I loved going back to Fez and Meknes and learning more than I knew before. Volubilis was my favorite stop this weekend because it’s really cool to think through history in that way. I’m also super excited to finish up my presentation and final exam so I can officially be done with my undergrad!

  9. On our last excursion as a group, we visited three famous cities, all known for different things. In Volubilis, we learned about the daily lives of the Roman, and how to avoid heat stroke, but not very well.

In Meknes, we took a bus tour of the city, and watched the local artisans create master pieces out of clay. We visited a famous Moroccan prison, and probably saw a ghost.

In Fes we viewed and smelled the process of tanning and dying leather goods, but unfortunately left before any real shopping could be done.

This third week by far has been the fastest. I don't know weather to be happy that I will soon be reunited with my loving family and precious pup, or sad that I will be leaving a country that has opened its arms to us and our loud but well meaning posse. I guess a bit of both will do.

In this final week, I hope to solidify what I have learned and take home with me more than souvenirs, but the memories, culture and lessons that the people of Morocco have given me. At times, it has been frustrating, the language barrier and laid back nature has often left my strict and organized brain grasping for structure, but I believe its thought me something new about life, and I hope to apply it to life beyond our short, impacting, unforgettable study abroad trip.

  10. Week three has come to a close, and it has been a memorable one for sure. The week has been jammed pack with excursions, volunteering, and adventures. I practiced calligraphy, toured pottery workshops in both Rabat and Fes, explored the Roman ruins in Volubilis, and perspired through the souks of Fes. I have enjoyed exploring the different cities with all of their culture and kind people; however my favorite aspect of this study abroad trip has been the volunteering. Today we had the honor to volunteer at a home that houses women who are going through cancer treatment. The women were kind and welcomed us with open arms. They lovingly shared their stories, coucous, and dance moves with us. I feel incredibly grateful for being able to spend my time with these strong women. They amaze me with their cheery spirits, upbeat personalities, and kind hearts. I cannot wait to have the opportunity to visit the house again during the rest of my stay in Rabat.

  11. Unfortunately my laptop will no longer hold a charge so I'm having to do this from my phone and it won't allow me to post it on the blogspot. I've been really overwhelmed lately so I tried to just slow down and enjoy things as they came this weekend. It was very refreshing for me. Even though it was very hot, I managed to really enjoy fes. I think if it were just a little cooler there, I could spend a lot more time there. I think the way the medina is set up is so cool. I've never seen anything like this. I probably never will. It's crazy to me that people live there all the time and have managed to memorize the labyrinth like medina. I wish I could spend more time there, but maybe in the fall or winter. I'm getting in the mood where I'm ready to be home but I also would really like to enjoy this last week in morocco. Volubilis was really awesome and I've really enjoyed seeing all of the ruins and artifacts that I've seen lately. These are some of the coolest places I've ever been. I can't wait to go other places in the world and see similar sites. This has truly been a wonderful experience.

  12. It's hard to believe we've been in Morocco for three weeks now. I've had a wonderful time being around the culture, trying all the different foods, and learning about all the history that took place in Morocco.
My favorite part of this week has been the trip to Meknes and Fez. Although it was extremely hot, I still had a fun time exploring the souk and learning all the history from our tour guides.
I also enjoyed earlier today when we got to visit the women who are going through cancer. I personally know people who have died from cancer so talking to those women today made me very emotional. It was a great cultural experience to see all the dancing and singing that took place.
I am really going to miss Rabat when we leave next week. I already can't wait for next year when I come back.

  13. After three long and exciting weeks in Morocco, I feel like i live here. If only I spoke either Arabic or French I could see myself living here for a time, most preferably in Rabat or Chefchaouen. Fez was an adventure around every turn. I was most impressed by the small roads and our amazing hotel. I have never seen anything so extravagant and well put together, let alone in a hotel that exceeded all my expectations. I am both thrilled and very saddened by the fact that we are depart to go back home in just a few days. I think I discovered a part of myself while talking to the woman at the cancer care house. I thought it was going to be a melancholy experience that brought back memories I'd rather forget but instead I made two wonderful new friends and one asked me to marry here own daughter whom lives just outside Fez! I exchanged facebook profiles with both of them :) That has, by far, been my most memorable time here in Morocco and I will never forget the amazing and strong woman that stay there. Inshalla, they will get better soon and can return to their families.
