Summer program in Morocco journals (week 3)

  1. This week we went to the Zoo, and saw Stromae and Robert Plant. This weekend we went to Chefchaouen and Tangier. Chefchaouen was beautiful. I liked the souk there because it wasn't crowded. I didn't go on the hike because my pace is slower, but I enjoyed my time at the cafe where I had some of the famous Moroccan mint tea and some fruit salad. I bought a dress and some very cool pants. Dinner was tagine and creme caramel, but I got to chat with Soumaya and Loubna while we ate, which was fun. In Tangier I swam a lot, and picked up a few rocks and shells on the beach and had a truly delicious fish soup for lunch. After that, we went to a famous cafe called Hafa. We were supposed to see Hercules Cave, but it was closed to the public, so after that we drove home.

  2. This past week has been great! On Wednesday we went on a field trip to the zoo! I loved seeing all the animals. The zoo that we went to was so different from the zoo I went to in America, in Georgia. There is more separation between the animals and people in the zoos in America. In Morocco it seemed more like a huge park with fences, but no glass between you and the animals. Some animals I saw were zebras, giraffes, turtles, porcupines, and elephants. Then, when I thought the day couldn’t get any better, we were told that we were going to go play paintball! I was so excited. I love doing activities like that. I also really enjoyed seeing everyone’s competitive side. Although, we argue now about who won and we will probably argue for the rest of our lives, it was a great time. We even say we want to have a rematch in Statesboro. That would definitely be interesting and I would come visit Statesboro for that. By the way, MY team won….

On Friday, I went to Mawazine, which is a music festival that lasts a week long. I went to go see Ricky Martin. He sang “Livin’ La Vida Loca” and I was happy. Another known artist that played earlier in the week was Justin Timberlake.

This past weekend we went to Tangier and Chefchaouen. In Tangier, my favorite part was going to the beach and tanning. I also ate a really good steak for lunch that day.

This next week will most definitely be interesting and stressful due to the fact that we have finals and final projects. It will be bittersweet leaving Morocco. I’m not sure how I will feel about it, but we will see.

  3. Hello Everyone!!! Week three in morocco was great mawazine was amazing!!! We saw Justin Timberlake, Stromme, NeYo, and Ricky Martin in concert all of which were amazing concerts although the crowds were a bit of a hassle. We had some more free time than our first two weeks and I got to go out on the city alone. I found a great new study spot on the beach on the rocks which is beautiful. For our daily excursion we went to the Rabat zoo and see the animals. We also did paintball which was such a great time!!! On our weekend excursion we went to chefchauen and tangier. Chefchauen was a beautiful mountain city the paint on most of the buildings is blue to ward off the the devil. After chefchauen we went to tangier and that was amazing the water was so blue the beach was beautiful I finally got a chance to go swimming. that water was cold!!! It was a great week. 4. I can't believe that we just finished our third week here in Morocco! It was an amazing week. We went to the Rabat zoo which was so cool, there were so many animals and the place was so clean. We also got to play paintball! It was nice to take out some frustration and get away from school for a while. It really helped relieve some stress, and it fun getting to shoot my classmates and teacher! School is still going really well, I'm understanding the grammar pretty well which is the topic I was worried about. For the weekend we went to Tanger and Chefchaouen. Cehfchaouen is an absolutely gorgeous city! Everything was painted blue and white. And we got to hike to a beautiful mosque which had an amazing view of the city! Tanger was great too! We got to lay around and walk at the beach and swim in the Mediterranean! This week has been amazing and I am not ready for it to end! We will make this last week the best one!

  5. It's been three weeks and Morocco is still proving to be one of the best and most friendliest places that I have ever traveled to. This past week has been so much fun. Very early on in the week we went as a class to the Zoo here in Rabat! This was my first time ever at a zoo and getting to see some of the animals in person was amazing. We got the chance to go around and learn the name of many of the animals in Arabic. My favorite was the cheetah and getting to see one of the workers jump Into the exhibit and play with it. After our trip to the zoo, one of our teachers handed all of us a paper with new vocabulary that seemed to focus on warfare. She surprised us by taking us paintballing!! It was so much fun. On Friday I went with some friends to see Ricky Martin in concert. It was a great concert.
This weekend we went to Chefchaouen and Tangier for our trip. In Chefchaouen I fell in love with the city and the sights. The people were so nice. In Tangier we were able to spend time on the beach and go shopping. Being able to see Spain and swim in the Mediterranean was one of the best experiences of my life. This past week has definitely made me want to stay here forever!

  6. Hello Everyone!

Last week was fun! It was Mawazine so there was a free concert to attend every day last week. Also, we played paintball after school one day. We studied paintball vocabulary on the bus, and then we attempted to use the vocabulary while we played a paintball game of capture the flag. One of my favorite parts of last week was going to the zoo and to the Egyptian Exhibit at an art gallery. I love the excursions we go to at school because we are able to learn Arabic while having fun. I also loved going to Chefchaouen and Tangier. Chefchaouen is a beautiful blue city, and it felt great to stick my toes into the Mediterranean Sea.

Overall, I love Morocco, and I am sad that this is our last week because I've met a lot of great people here.

    Sincerely,
    Yavaria Ryan

  7. Ahlan!

The last week is approaching and I am so sad. Well this week we took excursions to the Zoo and to play Paintball! It was so much fun especially to see everyone so competitive and to use Arabic on the field. The zoo was great too, seeing elephants, giraffes, and zebras were my favorite part. With the last week approaching we also have finals and projects coming up so this weekend was a perfect get away. We went to the beautiful city of Chefchaouen, in all blue and white. We also went to the city of Tangier and got to go to the famous Cafe Hafa where the Rollings Stones have been to before. The best part was going to The Mediterranean Sea (Al-Bahr Al-Abyad Al-Moutawassid) the most enjoyable part of my trip so far. Also getting to spend it with the people around me was even better. oh yeah, and I can't forget about the seafood we had! Overall, the 3rd week was a blast. It's bittersweet because i know my stay in Morocco is coming to an end soon, but I'm glad it's been nothing but a great time.

  8. Good Morning! Week three was just finished and that was probably the biggest week. We had Mawazine, Chefchaouen, Tangier, and paintball. My week didn't start out too good but it seemed like everything was getting better . It just started off bad. On Wednesday I got to let out my anger in a very aggressive paintball match. This helped so much just to let off some steam and still have to work together.
I want to talk about the beauty of travelling because I am still in awe of how amazing Chefchaouen was. The blue and white colors of the city are so amazing. So many languages are spoken there and everything was calm. For once, we had a calm relaxing vacation. I even held a bee I was so relaxed.

  9. This week went kind of fast. We did not have as many excursions but more studying and preparing for exams and projects. We went to an exhibition of Egyptian art. On Saturday, we toured Chefchaouen and hiked to a mosque on the top of a hill. Sunday, we rested on the beach of Tangier and finished with lunch at a nice restaurant close to the beach. We, of course, took time out for tea at at Cafe Hafa. The plan to visit the Hercules caves was canceled due to renovation. I was able to converse in Spanish, as well as French and Arabic, due to the diversity of languages there.

This week was one of the more relazed weeks i had since I been here but it has also been a busy one too. I met several new people this week around town and they are locals to the area too. Im getting more used to communicating with the cab drivers and finding my way around town. More mawazine concerts were this week and that was a great way for me to see some people that would be hard to see in america. I went to a show by some guy named stromar and I have only heard of him in music circles but not that much in american. He definitely has a lot of influence in french speaking areas and it made me realize how small of a monolith english speaking music artists are. Of cousre english is becoming a worldwid language but the its actual influence in art related media has dismal effect than other languages.

For the excursions we went to the zoo and it was more fun than I thought it would be. One the weekend we went to chefchaoen and the city is more quit and laid back than the other cities we been to including rabat. We climbed up the mountain and the view of the city is chill. I like the city more than the others. Tangier was really nice too. The beach was realky relaxing and the water was way clearer than the georgia coast.

  11. Hello world!

This is Sarah Keith, checking in with what will be my last blog before I leave Morocco! What can I say, other than this trip was one of the most amazing things I have ever done. My past week was a bit uneventful, as I finally went to get my hurt ankle checked out, and was told to take it easy for the days to come. With that said, I feel as though I was given such a blessing in having free time to not only rest, but reflect on how awesome this experience was. From traveling on camels and watching the sunrise on the sand dunes in the Sahara, to reveling at the detail in the handiwork of the Hassan II Mosque, and meeting the children at the after school program - I've been like a sponge, trying to soak up everything, but never really had a chance to digest it until now. There were so many moments during this month that I literally stopped in my tracks and thanked God...I was in awe.

I traveled to Morocco with a group of strangers, and as our time draws to a close, I feel like I'm leaving with more - they became my home away from home. With finals approaching and presentations due, we're a little on edge and definitely drained, but I can honestly say that I traveled with the best group of people. So, thank you guys for giving me a ton of laughs, late night conversations, ratchet television (insider), but also for challenging and growing with me! For everyone reading, please say a prayer - we still have finals!! See you soon!

    Sarah
