  1. Darby Galler: Dubai seems like such a cool place to visit. It’s amazing how this country has built its way from desert sand to this very rich country with many tourists’ attractions. Recently an old babysitter of mine visited Dubai and from looking at her pictures on Facebook it seems like such a cool place. All the cool architectures shown in the videos were in my old babysitter’s pictures too. I think it is really smart to start building this country into a tourist attraction now and not wait for the oil to run out. Dubai has done a great job so far, and if I have money when I get older, it is definitely a place I want to visit. on ARAB 1001: Dubai

  2. Dubai is definitely one of the coolest and most impressive places I've ever seen. The amount of progress they have made in just a few years is unparalleled by any other country in history. The country attracts many wealthy business and people that are more than willing to snatch up land from the rapidly growing country. And I was amazed once again by the Sheikh's comfort ability with his people and others. on ARAB 1001

  3. Dubai seems like it is a place that is definitely where a person would want to go in order to have a good time. It also seems like only rich people would live and visit there. I had met a man who had helped with the architecture for the Burj Khalifa and I thought that was pretty awesome. I can tell that Dubai will be one of the top vacation spots for people around the world very soon. It seems like there is still a lot of construction going on. The song near the beginning of the 60 Minutes video is one that I have been trying to find on Youtube since forever!!! I would love it if you could tell me the name of it. Thank you!! I have always wanted to visit Dubai and these movies made me want to visit it even more! I've always heard that Dubai is an expensive place to live and I know why now. I like how Sheikh wants the best for his people as soon as he can and doesn't want any of his people to miss out. I am completely amazed that Sultan created the Palm Islands and the fact that they are planning to make more! It's interesting that Dubai is the only country in the Middle East that is so advanced and is continuing to grow.

I found it interesting that not ever a month after engineers started building the palm tree island the unfortunate attacks of 9-11 occurred pausing tourism in the process. Saudia Arabia is know for oil (#1 producer) and this video said that they were projected to run out of it by 2016. If thats true then we are in trouble and soo is the economy of Saudia Arabia so it makes a lot of sense that are trying to become the number one tourist destination. For example Jordan has little resources compared to Saudia Arabia and their economy only thrives off tourism. I found it bold that the Sheikh wanted to expand the coastline and create the island only using natural resources. A plan like this would normally take 12 years but they completed it in only 5. It was fascinating seing the science behind this build especially the interaction that caused the coastline to shift. I liked the fact that the island is apart of the ecosystem and is actually creating new sea life as a result. I am blown away by the end result and the new goal of the world island that will add 1500 km to the coastline. Dubai is one of the wealthiest nations and home to some of the most brilliant individuals. I would love to visit there and be able to see of of the most cutting edge nation around the world.

I remember seeing this documentary before. However, Dubai is one of my favorite cities in the middle east besides that of Doha. I find it interesting that the city basically sprang up in the desert. Growing up as a kid I never heard much about Dubai. Now i realize the reason why is because it was just a desert region with no major cities. Now the city is a multicultural hub. I'm always intrigued by the lives of Sheikh's. I like that he has two wives. I find it interesting that he has a wife which is barely seen in public and another which is a princess of some sort from Jordan. It also reminded me that Dubai had the largest inside ski slope. The one thing about the people which have inhabited and inhabit the regions of the middle east is that they've always built wonderful and beautiful cities. They will continue to push the limits in architectural designs.

I'm not sure what to think about Dubai. I couldn't help but feel uneasy and a tad upset at the things being built there. The Sheikh has all these ambitions plans that seem exciting, fun, and innovative but I feel as if he has a hidden agenda. He says in his 60 minute interview that he likes the US and wants to be friendly with them, but I get the feeling he is trying to BE the US or another European country. Not that the people of Dubai dont deserve lavish hotels and a high standard of living but at what cost? I want to research the impacts on the environment this ambition has and the conditions the workers have to live and work in. Additionally, I wonder what it would be like for an American to move and live there. Would the government be about the people or simply whats best for the countries leaders. I just felt red flags flying the more I watched and learned. I do however like that women are beginning to have a more active say in the government and aren't as suppressed.

I like Dubai, the one thing I don't like is that the main source of their profit is from a fuel that pollutes. I hope their tourist/vacation industry somehow grows to replace the sell of oil soon, even though it is unlikely.
Dubai has the greatest selection of rare and expensive cars in the world. Since I am an engineer this is probably one of the greatest attractions for me to go their. I was recently even thinking about becoming an automotive journalist that would also talk about the car's engineering feats instead of talking about it like a toy. Which made me think of going to Dubai if I could. I also heard that the sheikh will go to the greatest car dealer in Dubai and then point at a few cars and they'll deliver the cars to his house, then he will just send back the ones he doesn't want.
When they say they have a 7 star hotel, it makes me wonder if they paid to have that rating. I've been in a 5 star hotel and the only way I can imagine their being a 7 star hotel is if a concierges did absolutely EVERYTHING for you.

  10. Fuel seems like avery good source of income for acountry. It has some negative effects but I guess you get what you use what you have.Tourism will probably boost up soon to add more revenue to their economy. Vroom! I love cars so this is an interesting country as well. Its taking my mine from the benz-and bmw's of europe. I'm not into buildings a whole lot but go Dubai.History is something I'm going to look into more since I am a history major. Might fine out some interesting dubai facts.I never knew what a sheikh was really until I saw this video. It interesting to learn about more than a senator or president. When Hotels are better than homes to me so that was a nice treat to loo into one. One day I want to live in a hiotel. No laundry! yay! A concierge is better than a wife or mother. I gotta get one of those.

  11. This has to be the first time I've ever heard the word "Sheikh" and Donald Trump within the same sentence, but, from what I've seen, the comparison made in the video of Sheikh Muhammad to Donald Trump is incredibly astute. His first thought upon receiving suggestions for new projects seems to be "Why can't we double it? Why not bigger/more?" It's absolutely no surprise his only real issue with the US is its "Foreign Policy," as he completely embodies the ethos of the stereotypical American capitalist.
While his plans for Dubai are noble and his ambition is infectious, one continually wonders "is this perhaps too much at one time?" Whether or not the economic/social developments he wishes to realize are being done at a manageable/reasonable pace seems to not concern him. Referring back to the comparison made with Donald Trump, while Trump displays a similar enthusiasm when discussing his projects, one must recognize that Trump has been at the helm of not a few failed business ventures. As Anthony Jeselnik once quipped, “Donald, you've got a great sense of humor. You've been so happy to embarrass yourself on Saturday Night Live…and the casino business…” The difference in the case of Sheikh Muhammad, however, is that Trump does not play a particularly large role in the direction of the United States, at least compared with that of Muhammad in Dubai. While his introduction of more liberal “western” values and influences is promising on the surface, one wonders if an uncomfortably rapid level of social change won’t incite a backlash of some kind among the more conservative elements of their society. This and the existence of certain inquietudes among the laborers makes the growth fostered by Sheikh Muhammad come across as being more problematic than he might have one believe.
All in all, though, I do wish Dubai luck. After all, Sheikh Muhammad does have a point when he asks the interviewer why he finds it so unreasonable that he wants to give the people of Dubai all the things enjoyed by first world nations.

Dubai is a crazy lavish destination. The Palm Island itself has 220 hotels. I find it all a bit too much. It seems like only really wealthy people can afford to go there and enjoy it. The amount of preparation, effort and time put into the Palm Island project is ridiculous. I like how they used natural things like rocks and sand to make the land for the island. I feel like if the dint use natural things like rocks and sand, a lot of big environmentalist people would have had a lot to say about the building of this makeshift island. Another thing that I found to be out of this world about Dubai is that they have their own satellite. THAT IS REALLY BALLING ON A DIFFERENT LEVEL.

I’ve always heard so many great things about Dubai that it made me want to visit there. I know that in order for me to visit there, I would have to make sure that I am financially secure because it seems that when visiting Dubai, the term “Enjoying the Finer Things in Life” is taken very seriously. The fact that they are constantly trying to build and expand is a wonderful thing and can be an even better thing for tourists.
